Halloween is one of the best times of the year because it brings the whole family together for festivities and fun. Pets always get included into the mix because what’s more fun than dressing up your pet as a super hero or food item?
Although your pets are adorable in their costumes, it’s important to have some safety precautions during this holiday season. Here are some pet safety tips while you’re out trick-or-treating.
The candy isn’t for your pet
After a successful night of trick-or-treating, most will come home and dump it all onto the living floor to see what they’ve collected throughout the night. Some may even separate by candy and add the quantity up. If you’re dumping the candy on the floor with your pets, please keep them separated or contained. Candy isn’t for your pet and can severely harm them or even kill them.
Chocolate is a dog’s worst enemy. The chocolate is dangerous and tends to be lethal for dogs and cats. If your pet gets a hold of a piece of delicious chocolate, look out for these symptoms of chocolate poisoning:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Rapid breathing
- Seizures
The most dangerous part of the Halloween candy is the xylitol which is an artificial sweetener. This sweetener can cause sudden drop in blood sugar and cause seizures. It’s best to keep the pets away from the candy this season.
Answering the door to trick-or-treaters
It’s always so much fun to answer the door to the trick-or-treaters to see what they have dressed up for this year. With the door being constantly opening and closing this Halloween season, it’s best to keep the pets away from the door/ entryway. Pets typically aren’t exposed to scary and unusual costumes, so they could bark or try to run away. If your pet is territorial, they could become anxious and start to growl or attack the sweet and innocent trick-or-treaters. Instead of hassling with that issue, let’s keep the pets away from the door.
Halloween décor
Tis the season for pumpkins, corn, outdoor lighting and Halloween décor. Pumpkins and corn can be very dangerous to pets because they can induce gastrointestinal upset with your pet. The blockage in the intestines can make it hard for them to swallow. With Halloween décor, there is bound to electrical cords for the multi-colored lights strung above your overhang.
